Emerging Technologies Integration | Collaboration, Design and Workshop Facilitation

Workshop Overview

Creative Technology: Game Design for Educators was a 4-week virtual workshop created to help teachers from two Filipino secondary schools bring innovative technologies into their classrooms, even with limited internet and low-tech resources. The workshop was developed in collaboration with the Director of Innovation at Atlanta International School and a design expert.

Problem

Teachers found it challenging to use innovative methods like game-based learning because of low bandwidth and a lack of access to advanced tools.

Solution

To tackle these issues, the workshop introduced user-friendly tools like TinkerCAD and GameMaker Studio that worked with the participants’ technical limitations. Teachers were also taught foundational game-based learning methods, such as the Mechanics, Dynamics, Aesthetics (MDA) framework, which helped them connect game design principles to their teaching. Using a flipped classroom model, they practiced the first phases of Design Thinking—empathize, define, and ideate—in interactive breakout sessions. Then they applied these skills to design educational games and presented their projects, receiving valuable feedback on their ideas.

Results

The workshop helped teachers overcome technical challenges and gain the confidence to use game-based learning in their classrooms. They walked away with practical tools, strategies, and a solid foundation to create engaging lessons tailored to their students.
